For a taken domain, the WHOIS lookup shows its current status along with
registration, last-updated, and expiration dates and the registrar of record.
A deeper lookup can surface registrant, admin, and technical contact details
where the registry makes them public. It's the fastest way to size up a domain
that's already registered.
